Part 1
Teacher Librarian Part 1 prepares teachers to develop and coordinate an integrated school curriculum as part of a school library information centre. This course explores the role of teacher-librarians as curriculum leaders and media/technology specialists while emphasizing effective collaboration practices. Teacher Librarian Part 1 also supports the expectations outlined in the Ministry of Education curriculum policy documents and other Ministry of Education policies.
Candidates learn strategies to enhance teaching and learning experiences in schools and school library information centres. Selected topics include collection development and selection strategies, information literacy, censorship, and media and technology integration. The College recognizes that candidates will have a need to explore, in an integrated delivery model, topics and issues of particular relevance to the educational context in which they work or may work. The course is open to all elementary and secondary teachers who hold a valid Ontario College of Teachers certification.
Part 2
Teacher Librarian Part 2 is intended for elementary or secondary teacher-librarians and/or teachers who are interested in learning more about the school library information centre within the whole school context. The course extends and reinforces the knowledge and skills from Part 1. The purpose is to prepare candidates to coordinate a school library information centre and to be competent in the delivery of resource-based programs. This Additional Qualification course supports the expectations outlined in the Ministry of Education curriculum policy documents and other Ministry of Education policies.
This course is open to all elementary and secondary teachers who have a basic qualification in general studies and who have completed Teacher Librarian Part 1, along with one year of successful teaching experience.
Specialist
Teacher Librarian Specialist is intended for elementary or secondary teacher-librarians who are interested in assuming educational leadership responsibilities for the integration of research skills into the school curriculum. This course provides candidates with a comprehensive understanding of the role of the teacher-librarian within the school setting.
This course extends the knowledge and skills from Part 1 and Part 2. Particular emphasis is placed on the leadership functions of the teacher-librarian with regard to school library programs.
