Catholic Teachers Reaffirm Commitment to Black History Month

“As February unfolds, it brings with it an important opportunity to celebrate the diversity and achievements of Black people in Canada and reflect on the vital contributions they have made to our shared history and culture. For our Association, it is also a time to recognize and honour our Black Catholic teachers – those who go above and beyond to inspire and nurture their students, create inclusive spaces, and strengthen our Catholic school communities through their commitment to equity and excellence.

Black History Month is also a time to reflect on Canada’s painful history and the distinct challenges that Black people in Canada continue to face in their daily lives, including systemic barriers, racism, and discrimination. Recognizing these realities is essential in our collective work toward meaningful change. Through education, advocacy, and intentional action, we can build a better future where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
Our commitment to equity means amplifying Black voices, celebrating Black excellence, and continuing to challenge injustice wherever it exists. This month, I encourage all Catholic teachers to engage with resources that highlight the experiences of Black students and teachers – to listen, learn, and be active participants in the journey toward equality.

Let us use this time to not only reflect, but to take steps towards building a more just and inclusive society in our classrooms and beyond.”
