Statement on the Passing of His Holiness Pope Francis

"It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a shepherd of peace, humility, and unwavering compassion. Like St. Francis of Assisi, the saint after whom he took his papal name, Pope Francis was a tireless advocate for the poor and marginalized and leaves behind a legacy rooted in love, justice, and mercy.
Throughout his tenure, Pope Francis was a consistent and courageous advocate for social and environmental justice. He challenged systems of inequality, took the important first steps towards reconciliation with Canada's Indigenous communities, stood with refugees and the poor, and called the world to urgent action on climate change. He spoke often of the dignity of work, the rights of workers, and the importance of education - values that deeply resonate with Catholic teachers and the mission we carry into our classrooms each day.
While people around the world may experience his passing in different ways, we take this moment to recognize a leader who strived to bring compassion, inclusivity, and dialogue to the centre of the global stage.
May his legacy continue to inspire conversations rooted in justice, mercy, and the common good."
